Conservation Halton Increases Fees effective January 1, 2018

Posted by on

Conservation Halton will increase fees for park daily entrance fees, annual memberships, educational programs, and Glen Eden daily fees, effective January 1, 2018. Park Daily Entrance fees will increase $0.25 cents per person. Halton Parks memberships will also see an average increase of 5%. The most recent increase of park entrance fees occurred in 2014. The price of a Halton Parks Membership has remained consistent since 2009.  As an example the daily entrance fee to Kelso Conservation Area will increase to $7.00 from $6.75 including HST.

Why are the fees increasing?

Conservation Halton strives to keep the parks affordable and accessible for our visitors. Operating costs are increasing  with more and more people coming to visit Halton Parks. Other factors like the impact of Bill 148 (which includes an increase in the minimum wage) also contribute to increased operating costs. The adjusted fees will help to ensure everyone can enjoy Halton Parks,  and allow us to continue to provide quality, safe experiences in nature.

Trail maintenance takes time and money to perform so that we can provide you with a safe experience with nature. Our staff regularly survey the forest cover to watch out for potential hazards, such as a tree potentially falling, to protect all who visit. Other add-on services such as grooming the trails for cross country skiing, or new mountain bike builds, also use staff and resources. Fees also pay for public programs (included in your admission fee), such as Family Movie Night at Kelso, or Maple Town at Mountsberg, or Yoga in the Park at Rattlesnake Point, programs where families and individuals can engage with nature, and build lasting memories.

How are the parks funded now?

98% percent of Conservation Halton Park revenue comes from user generated fees such as lift tickets, park admissions, annual memberships, Glen Eden season passes, and other similar fees. Tax-supported funding of 2% is provided from the Halton Region municipal levy to support educational programs.

If I renew my membership in January, which rate will apply?

The 2018 fees will be in effect, and the increase will apply. As has been the case the last few years, you get a 15% discount when renewing your Halton Parks membership.
