New to Mountain Biking?
Mountain Biking as Part of Heathy, Active Lifestyles
Halton Parks is home to two of Southern Ontario’s most popular mountain biking destinations – Kelso and Hilton Falls Conservation Areas. These parks offer extensive trail networks and programming that are suitable to a range of abilities and fitness levels. Programs and services include daily admissions, memberships, Ontario Cup cross-country and downhill events, a weekly MTB Race Series, Ways of the Woods Bike Camps, and the Mountain Bike Ambassador program.
While Halton Parks has lots to offer intermediate and advanced riders, there are plenty of ways that beginners and kids can build their skills too! It serves as a conduit for introducing people to the sport of mountain biking and contributes to the development of the sport and future athletes. Below are some of the ways that Halton Parks engages with the community to promote healthy, active lifestyles, and to make the sport of mountain biking accessible.
Learn how to navigate the trails like a pro at the Kelso Mountain Bike School.
The trails are calling your name. There’s no better time to learn than now.
Kelso’s team of MTB Instructors are here to introduce you to the trails, develop your skills, boost your confidence, guide you on epic rides, and help you become the rider you want to be!
Our initial program offering will consist of Private Lessons, Group Lessons, and Guided Rides. Offerings will target new riders, and the seasoned trail user; we will even have programs specifically designed to assist riders with improving their abilities for the Kelso MTB Race Series.
Ways of the Woods Bike Camps
With more than 30 years of history delivering summer camp programs to children in the Halton Region, Ways of the Woods day camps offer unique outdoor summer camp experiences for children of all ages.
Over the past two seasons, Ways of the Woods has undertaken major efforts to expand its program offerings, including Bike Camps which are truly second to none. Camps include an Intro Bike Camp for ages 8-12, Advanced Bike Camp for ages 10-12, and Trail Builders Bike Camp for ages 10-14.
Bike Camps are suited for kids who are just getting started in their mountain bike adventures through to advanced riders. They offer an action packed week on the trail network at Kelso, and visits to Hilton Falls for advanced groups.
For even more time on two wheels, consider signing up for the Kelso weekly MTB Race Series. Campers may stay after camp on Tuesdays (at no charge) in order to participate. All that is required is a cheering section and a ride home from parents/guardians after the race!
Kelso Weekly MTB Race Series
One of the best weekly race series in Ontario!
Kelso’s weekly MTB Race Series has grown with resounding success over the past seven years and attracts 300+ riders ranging in age from ages 5 to 60+ and encompassing all ability and fitness levels for some of the most fun you can have on two wheels each week. Multiple distances and categories along with an amazing array of draw prizes from a long list of sponsors are offered every week.
The weekly MTB Race Series will be back at Kelso in 2018. Stay tuned for details.
A safe, fun, and free kids’ loop is located at the bottom of the hill for kids who are interested in building their skills and are curious to give it a try. This race is open to anyone; from junior rocking the run bike with Mom pushing them up the hill to kids who are a little more independent, this short and entertaining 300m loop is where it’s at for the little ones that aren’t quite ready to jump up to our beginner loop. And, for $15 kids can race the whole Series (sponsored by Ways of the Woods Bike Camp) and we’ll keep track of their progress throughout the season and enter them in the weekly draw to win some amazing prizes.
The kids race is a great way for kids to practice mountain biking while having fun, and challenging themselves with other kids that love riding as much as they do!
The Mountain Bike Skills Zone at Kelso is a welcome addition to the extensive mountain bike trail network, Ways of the Woods Bike Camps, and MTB Kids Series.
Features such as wooden bridges, rollers, rocks, and logs offer the perfect environment for riders of all ages to learn to properly tackle technical features and to progress their skills and confidence in a controlled environment. Whether you are working with one of our certified coaches in a WOW program or exploring the Skills Zone on your own the features will help you to practice all of the skills you will need to be successful on the Kelso trail network and beyond.
The Mountain Bike Skills Zone provides the community with the opportunity to educate riders, especially children and youth, in a structured and safe area. It serves as an excellent gateway to our other Halton Parks mountain bike programs.
